You meet a lot of intrepid outdoor enthusiasts at The Stables. Most take to the surrounding mountains on two feet; others prefer two wheels.
That is the case with the hardy souls at Cyclist No. 1 a website devoted to the best mountain biking you will ever experience in, or more likely half-out, of the saddle.
They recently found their way up and down some of the finest slopes in The Torridon area and the resulting article The Epic Ride – Into Torridon, the UK’s most wild riding recounts their hair-raising adventures.
It’s handlebar-gripping stuff.
Whenever the riding let our concentration wander, then we noticed the mountains above, waiting and, yes, brooding a little, looking every inch like some massive geological doormen, weighing up whether or not to let us puny humans in for the day’s entertainment.
Fortunately these hardy mountain bikers were allowed in and they had some exhilarating days on the Torridon mountains, regrouping each night at The Stables to relive their adventures and plan the next day’s routes.
One image from their trip is particularly gripping, a mind-boggling descent which looks as if it would be tough work with ropes and ice axes never mind on a mountain bike.
The journal’s final verdict is that the Torridon area has some of the most technical single track mountain bike routes anywhere in the UK, all set against a backdrop of stunning mountains.
