Our gardener Tom talks about the Autumn season here in the kitchen garden
Late August and September have seen a change in weather and temperature for the kitchen garden. Gone are the consecutive days of sunshine- Autumn is truly here. Having said that, the garden is still producing a healthy variety of mouth-watering fruit and veg for chef Ross and his team to experiment with.
The espaliered apple trees look magnificent this year with the discovery variety being particularly sweet and crisp. A good prune over winter has certainly helped here. Seeds are still being sown in the greenhouse and a range of brassicas and lettuce have been planted in the hope of a crop over winter.
It is always quite difficult to know what will grow well in Wester Ross with the weather so unpredictable and the season so short!
