The Whisky Bar here at The Torridon is not just all about whisky! With over 100 different selections of Gin to choose from, including almost 40 Scottish varieties, we are about all things Gin as well! Ahead of world Gin day on June 10, we have asked two of our lovely front of house team, Rosie and Peter, for the pick of the Gin selections from our selection at The Torridon.
Rosie recommends:
Caorunn Gin
This lovely classic London Dry Gin from Speyside just works perfectly here at the Torridon for those seeking a refreshment after a long day in the hills. A lovely infusion of five different foraged Scottish highland botanicals, such as heather and bog myrtle, along with 6 other classics botanicals like angelica root and orange peel, Caorunn Gin really brings out the essence of the highlands. Clean, crisp and invigorating with a hint of spice.
Recommended serving: A refreshing Old Tom cocktail.
Brockmans Gin
Not to just stick to the Scottish product, I have also chosen a Brockmans Gin. Lively and playful, with botanicals such as blueberries and blackberries and liquorice all coming across. Intensely aromatic but with a clean smooth palate, this a great ‘gateway gin’ for the non believers, or anyone getting into gin.
Recommended serving: You can’t go wrong with a G&T, garnished with fresh raspberries, mint and served with Fever Tree Tonic of course!
Peter recommends:
Rock Rose Gin
This very aromatic and award winning gin from the crew at Dunnet Bay Distillery is a lovely light but punchy affair. With a combination of traditional botanicals like juniper and coriander and wild foraged botanicals such as rose root, rowan berries and sea buckthorn, this gin has a real sense of place, you can really taste the sea air of Caithness in this one.
Recommended serving: A Negroni. Double of course.
Gin Mare
I love to recommend this one to guests who want to try something ‘a little bit different’. Sourced from the coasts of Spain, Gin Mare is an extremely well balanced gin, with a vibrant herbaceous nose. Some great herbal aromatics such as rosemary, thyme and basil shine through on the nose, with arbequina olives arriving on the palate to provide and smooth and savoury texture. A little citrus zest arrives at the end to spice things up.
Recommended serving: Dry martini, dirty, with olives. And stirred, not shaken!
Both recommend:
The Isle of Harris Gin
Probably our most requested gin here at The Torridon, and for good reason! A lovely refreshing gin coming from the Isle of Harris Distillery, the Harris Gin is a light and delicate affair, but at the same time very deep and complex. A lovely nose of pine needles and bitter orange and grapefruit is immediately obvious, which is followed by a lovely palate with expressions of bitter juniper, crushed coriander and sweet vanilla. Harris Gin has a lovely dry, lean and mineral-y texture with a finish that is both salty and sweet, provided by the locally harvest sugar kelp used as a botanical.
Recommended serving: A G&T, with Scottish Walter Gergor’s Tonic and garnished with a red grapefruit wedge.
Make the most of your stay here at The Torridon by popping into the bar and grabbing a perfectly served Gin & Tonic, Martini or Negroni, and maybe finding a new favourite Gin to take home!
Ps. Keep your ears to the ground….new ‘ginspirations’ for The Torridon are just around the corner…’
