Scotland’s Gin Trail is a new route devised by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) which takes in some of the best gin distilleries in country.
Given that it stretches from the Lowlands to the tip of Shetland it is probably meant more as an inspiration than a practical road map for travellers.
Getting into the spirit of the initiative, however, it would still be fun to tick off a distillery or two on a trip through the Scotland.
Hitting The Gin Trail
While a distillery visit is a great way to learn the story and process, a true gin enthusiast should probably know the best way to enjoy their favourite drink is in the Torridon bar where you have a) a fantastic selection to choose from b) a knowledgeable bar staff to chart your way through the crystal clear waters and c) luxury surroundings in which to enjoy them.
We have mentioned our ever-growing gin collection before. This list includes traditional gins, gin liqueurs and gin-style drinks which tempt a new generation of connoisseurs.
One of the latest of these, Minus 33 is a good example of a drink distilled for the modern taste.
As it only has an ABV of 33% – below the 37.5% minimum requirement – it can’t technically be called gin. Instead, the distiller has produced a lower calorie botanical-infused spirit with hints of juniper, citrus, lavender, elderflower and angelica.
This is just the sort of base our bar staff love to start with to conjure up something special pre-dinner.
You can download the SWA map here. But next time you hit the Scottish gin trail, plan to include a seat beside The Torridon’s fireplace in your itinerary.
