Kohlrabi: with a name like something out of a Star Wars script this vegetable originating from the 16th century looks like it sounds, different. Sputnik or vegetable, it wouldn’t be out of place in an orbit round Mars. Kohlrabi or cabbage turnip grows like a round turnip with antennae of sprouting cabbage-like leaves and has a slight turnip-like taste – just a touch peppery. But is a delicious versatile vegetable. It should be grown along with brassicas in the veggie plot rotation. When harvested, it is about tennis ball size and is rich in vitamin c and other vitamins. It can be shredded in coleslaw, salad mix or used as a whole cooked vegetable. We have been growing a few of the green variety but you can also get seed for purple plants too. It was on the chef’s wish list of things for me to grow , he said it might fill a space in the garden!
