25 years in the family

Built in 1887 by William King-Noel, 1st Earl of Lovelace, The Torridon was used as a hunting lodge up until the 1960’s when it opened as a hotel. The Gregory Family (Rohaise’s parents) originally bought the property in 1992 and it has remained in the family ever since.

The Gregory’s vision was to offer guests a luxurious modern day comfort and first class service. This was recognised in 1993 when, after being opened for just 12 months the hotel was awarded ‘Best Newcomer’ by the AA and later in 1998 ‘Best Hotel in Scotland’.

Rohaise and Dan bought the business from her parents in 2004, having spent 5 years as managers. Since 2007, we have completed a full refurbishment and today The Torridon consists of The Torridon Hotel, The Torridon 1887 Restaurant, The Stables, Torridon Activities and Torridon Boat House.

We are extremely proud that The Torridon Hotel is now a member of both Pride of Britain hotels and Connoisseurs Scotland in recognition of our hard work, time and effort.

Working to our own individual strengths, over the years, we have shared the roles and responsibilities of managing a busy hotel. We can be polar opposites but combined we make a formidable team. Dan’s main focus tends to be within business, finance, marketing, grounds, garden and maintenance, whereas Rohaise concentrates on training, development, quality, team, refurbishment, design and health & safety, both coming together as and when required.

Our aspiration for The Torridon is and always has been to be the finest hotel in Scotland that welcomes muddy boots!

We also aim to exceed the expectations and needs of our guests by delivering unforgettable, unique memories whilst inspiring and challenging our team to deliver them.

We are extremely proud that our 1887 Restaurant is an award winning, fine-dining experience. We hold a ‘Field to Fork’ philosophy that creatively showcases the tastes and flavours from our ‘doorstep’ larder by our talented brigade. All of this is delivered by our outstanding service team, who share a passion for food and wine.

As you can imagine, there has been many highlights to running The Torridon, each of us have our own personal high points that we like to celebrate. For Dan, becoming a Master Inn Holder has been a huge achievement and something that he takes a massive amount of pride in. For Rohaise, gaining her certificate in coaching has been a major high point. Developing our own careers and seeing others developing themselves into confident and passionate individuals within the industry is a key interest for her. In addition to this Rohaise has made many great, amazing and supportive friends within the hospitality industry over the years.

Personal highlights are great, but it is always good to get accreditation and recognition from more official establishments and awards. The Torridon is the only hotel to have won Scottish Hotel of the Year twice Voted by the Scottish Hotel Awards, in both 2004 & 2011. We are also immensely proud to be nominated as one of the top 100 hotels in the world, voted by Sunday Times Traveller Magazine 2012 and most recently the AA awarded us Scottish Hotel of the year for 2012-13, again for the second time.

We have the pleasure of being a member of Pride of Britain Hotels, and won Hotel of the Year with them in 2014. As for looking forward, we have exciting plans to develop The Torridon, this includes creating luxury woodland suites to cater for a higher demand in self catering that we have seen with the success of the Boat House.

We will also be building on our apprenticeship programme and developing our on-site training with a dedicated building in the garden. Also planned for Spring 2018 is the development of housing and accommodation for our management team so that we can continue to attract a professional and highly skilled team.
