It is hardly the theory of relativity and Pythagoras won’t be turning in his grave but David Holmes of Manchester Metropolitan University has come up with an equation which some of us are celebrating with a slice of Pi.

Fourteen thousand motorists across Europe were asked what they wanted in a great summer drive and Dr Holmes has analysed their answers to come up with a winning formula.

Happily Scotland’s own North Coast 500 features highly in The Ultimate Summer Drive.

The quality of scenery plays an important role in the equation as does type of road, remoteness and viewpoints.

Weather is always hard to factor into a trip to the Highlands, but don’t let that stop anyone. You can be insanely lucky as many NC500 motorists discovered in the last few weeks.
