We ran the first winter skills course 2011 last weekend. The weather was a little exciting but with a bit of local knowledge, we managed to stay out of the worst of it. We spent the weekend on Beinn Eighe as this provided the most snow and the participants managed to cover just about everything on the course. We had a great time doing ice axe arrests and everyone learned about avalanche awareness. Dual highlights of the weekend were Sally and her amazing sliding ability – she must have the fastest waterproof trousers in the west – and the emergency snow shelters everyone built over lunch. Now we are really looking forward to The Torridon kids winter skills course, promising high energy and loads of fun.
