We have just run our first free Kid’s Winter Skills course at The Torridon and it was very well received. The course was aimed at children 11-16 years in the Highlands and we wanted to offer the sessions free of charge so that any child could get involved. The aim was to promote safe winter walking skills and to spend a weekend passing on these skills to the kids.
We had eight youngsters on the course from across the north of Scotland. We spent two cracking days on Beinn Eighe, covering essentials such ice axe arrest, crampon movement and avalanche awareness. The kids had loads of energy and at times the instructors were struggling to keep up with the kids. On Saturday night a guest speaker came in to give a talk for the kids with pizza and chips provided. It was a great weekend and we look forward to running the course again in 2011.
