Recently I have been able to run some rivers in the area with friends, most recently the River Ewe near Poolewe. The upper section of the Ewe is a nice Grade 2 run, offering a good introduction to river kayaking and a chance for the group to practice efficient paddling on rivers. Once in sight of the road bridge at Poolewe the group decided to have a look at the rapids. I went first, working over to the left of the river and planning on running the main falls, with a right turn followed by a sharp left at the bottom. However, once at the top of the falls, I realised there was more water in the river than first thought. The right turn was easily run but the left turn was a large pillow wave making for a quicker turn than normal. It was a great run and if I had more time, I would have run it again.
